The first new film that will screen is the indie thriller ‘Murder in the Woods.’
Hollywood’s arthouse cinema Arena Cinelounge is reopening as an outdoor venue for the time being on the roof of the nearby Montalbán.

Indoor theaters remain closed across California amid the ongoing novel coronavirus pandemic. It isn’t clear when they will get the permission to flip on the lights.

On Sept. 2, Arena Cinelounge at the Montalbán Rooftop will show its first new film, Murder in the Woods. The indie thriller is directed and produced by Mexican filmmaker Luis Iga Garza (The Call) from a script by Yelyna De León (Will and Grace, A Better Life).

Part of the Montalbán Rooftop’s mission is to support Latino talent.

Murder in the Woods features an ensemble cast of people of color, and was created by an all Latinx group of filmmakers. The movie’s release coincides with the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month, which kicks off Sept. 15.

The slasher pic stars Danny Trejo (Machete), José Julián (A Better Life, Shameless), Jeanette Samano (ISA, Female Fight Squad), Chelsea Rendon (Vida, Bright), Catherine Toribio (Jane the Virgin), Jordan Diambrini (The Outfield) and Kade Wise (Empire).

The Montalbán Rooftop has instituted a host of COVID-19 safety protocols, including temperature screenings, one-way entry and exit protocols, seating limitations, face covering requirements, enhanced cleaning. Additionally, no walk-ups will be allowed so every ticket must be purchased in advance.
